Wine lovers know that every year they have an appointment they cannot miss, the so-called Wine Oscars. The prestigious ranking of Winer Spectator magazine is published in December, where the 100 best wines in the world are ranked.
This year’s surprise came from a Spanish winery, Marqués de Murrieta, whose wine Castillo Ygay Gran Reserva Especial 2010 topped the list of the best wines. Of the more than 11,000 wines tasted, this wine has been classified as the best wine “for its history, its character, and for reminding us of the value of commitment, effort, and perseverance. Castillo Ygay 2010 from Bodegas Marqués de Murrieta is worthy of the award for Best Wine of the World”, according to the organization.
The wine involved is a red wine from the D.O.Ca. Rioja, made with Tempranillo and Mazuelo varieties. It is aged in two phases for 5 years, 18 months of which are in an oak barrel and the rest in a bottle. In the aging process, Castillo Ygay Especial Gran Reserva Especial is aged for 28 months in American oak barrels. In its visual tasting, cherry red hues stand out; in the olfactory phase, there is an intense aroma of red fruit, incense, spices, flowers, and truffle; finally, in the tasting phase, a velvety, structured, balanced and elegant taste can be perceived.
Castillo Ygay Gran Reserva Especial 2010 was the only Spanish wine to make it into the world’s top ten, but it managed to achieve first place.
