Nerello Cappuccio

Also known as: Nerello Mantellato

Sicilian red grape that traditionally partners Nerello Mascalese in Etna Rosso, adding colour, fruit and softness; a small number of single-varietal versions are also made.

Nerello Cappuccio is a red grape from Sicily, grown mainly in the north-east of the island, on the slopes of Mount Etna and around Messina. Its traditional role is to partner Nerello Mascalese in Etna Rosso, adding colour, fruit and gentler tannins. It is also part of the red wine of the Faro DOC, alongside Nerello Mascalese and Nocera. Some producers bottle it on its own, making medium-bodied, fruity and spicy reds.

How it is perceived on the list

Wine-list perception

Virtually unknown to guests, who at most recognise the name Nerello Mascalese. Its link with Etna gives it appeal among lovers of volcanic wines.

When it helps sell

A single-varietal bottling broadens an Etna section and helps explain how its classic red is built. It also works as a medium-bodied, gently fruity red for guests looking for something different.

Guest profile

Curious wine lovers who already know Etna reds and want to explore its grapes in more depth. Guests at Italian or Sicilian restaurants who are open to the sommelier's suggestions.

Best sales angle

Sell it as 'the other grape in Etna Rosso': Nerello Mascalese's partner. Pouring it by the glass alongside an Etna Rosso helps show what each variety brings.

When to highlight the grape

Only on lists with a broad Sicily or Etna section, or in sommelier selections focused on native grapes.

Common mistakes

Confusing it with Nerello Mascalese or presenting them as the same grape: they are different varieties.
Expecting a powerful red in the style of some Nero d'Avola: it usually makes medium-bodied wines.
Serving it too warm: a slightly cooler temperature usually shows its fruit better.
