Síria

Also known as: Roupeiro, Códega, Crato Branco

Portuguese white grape, known as Roupeiro in Alentejo and Códega in the Douro, that makes aromatic whites with citrus and floral notes, meant to be drunk young.

Síria is a white grape widely planted across inland Portugal, with different names depending on the area: Roupeiro in Alentejo, Códega in the Douro and Crato Branco in the Algarve. It makes aromatic wines with notes of lemon, orange and flowers, but tends to lose freshness and aroma quickly. That is why it is usually blended with higher-acid grapes such as Arinto, or with Antão Vaz in Alentejo whites. In higher areas such as Beira Interior it keeps its freshness better and is also bottled as a single varietal.

Winerim view

How it is perceived on the list

Wine-list perception

Practically unknown outside Portugal, where it also tends to play a supporting role in blends. It works better presented as part of an Alentejo white than as a grape on its own.

When it helps sell

To round out a Portuguese section with a simple, aromatic white. It is useful by the glass when you want an easy white that differs from the usual ones.

Guest profile

Curious guests looking for a fresh, aromatic, uncomplicated white. Also travellers who know Alentejo or inland Portugal.

Best sales angle

Sell it by origin and style, as an 'aromatic white from Alentejo', and mention the grape as a talking point. Always recommend the most recent vintages.

When to highlight the grape

Rarely as a headline grape; it makes sense to feature it on lists with a broad Portuguese section or a single-varietal wine from Beira Interior.

How to use Síria on a real wine list

A quick operating read to turn Síria into buying, recommendation and library navigation.

Guest reading

Síria should read as a familiar variety, a discovery or an origin argument. That role decides its visual weight.

Floor cue

Summarize Síria through texture, acidity, origin or dish. If the explanation takes longer than the decision, the sale weakens.

List role

Connect Síria with regions, styles and pairings so it does not become an isolated entry.

Compare it with one safe alternative and one differentiating option before listing it by the glass or bottle.

Common mistakes

Keeping bottles from older vintages: it usually loses aroma and freshness early.
Confusing Códega (Síria) with Códega do Larinho, a different Douro variety.
Relying on the grape name alone: origin and style tell the guest far more.

Suggested pairings

Grilled white fish
Salads
Seafood rice
Fresh cheeses
