Viosinho

A native white grape of the Douro and Trás-os-Montes that brings freshness, structure and floral aromas to Douro whites and is also used in white Port.

Viosinho is a native white variety from northern Portugal, grown mainly in the Douro and Trás-os-Montes. In the Douro it is usually part of white blends alongside Rabigato, Gouveio (the local name for Godello) and Códega do Larinho, and it is one of the grapes used in white Port. It makes fresh, well-structured wines with floral and fruity aromas that respond well to barrel fermentation and ageing. It is also bottled as a single varietal, although its more usual role is to bring freshness, body and aroma to a blend.

Winerim view

How it is perceived on the list

Wine-list perception

The name is almost unknown to guests, even to many fans of Portuguese wine. It works best when the list presents it as a Douro white, from a region guests do recognise for Port and its reds.

When it helps sell

When the list wants to broaden its Portuguese whites beyond Vinho Verde or bring in structured Douro whites. It also offers an alternative to the more usual whites on lists with a Portugal section.

Guest profile

Curious guests who already know Douro reds or Port and want to discover the region's whites. Also wine lovers who enjoy whites with body and freshness and look for rarely seen native varieties.

Best sales angle

Sell it by region before grape: 'a Douro white', then explain that Viosinho brings freshness and floral aromas. If it is a blend, naming the other grapes helps show the diversity of Portugal's native varieties.

When to highlight the grape

In Portuguese restaurants or those with a broad Portugal section, and on lists that want to showcase little-known native varieties.

How to use Viosinho on a real wine list

A quick operating read to turn Viosinho into buying, recommendation and library navigation.

Guest reading

Viosinho should read as a familiar variety, a discovery or an origin argument. That role decides its visual weight.

Floor cue

Summarize Viosinho through texture, acidity, origin or dish. If the explanation takes longer than the decision, the sale weakens.

List role

Connect Viosinho with regions, styles and pairings so it does not become an isolated entry.

Compare it with one safe alternative and one differentiating option before listing it by the glass or bottle.

Common mistakes

Listing it without context: the grape name alone means nothing to most guests, so link it to the Douro.
Assuming it is a single-varietal wine: in many Douro whites Viosinho is only part of the blend.
Serving barrel- or lees-aged versions too cold: they lose aroma and texture.
