Abona

Abona is the designation of origin covering the south and south-east of Tenerife, known for Listán Blanco whites from high-altitude vineyards on volcanic soils.

Abona covers the southern and south-eastern side of Tenerife, in the Canary Islands, with vineyards climbing from areas near the coast up the slopes of Mount Teide. It is a dry, sunny area where the altitude of many plots tempers the heat and helps the grapes keep their freshness. The soils are volcanic, and the main variety is Listán Blanco, joined by Listán Negro for the reds. It is best known for fresh whites with a mineral profile, alongside young Listán Negro reds.

What it signals on a wine list

Wine-list perception

On a wine list, Abona works as a discovery white with a volcanic Canary Islands origin. It helps to state the grape and the island, as most guests will not recognise the name of the DO.

When to highlight it

It fits well when someone wants a fresh, different white for shellfish or fish. It is also a good option in restaurants with a Canary Islands focus or an interest in volcanic wines.

Guest profile

Sommeliers or curious guests looking for rarely seen wines, and tourists keen to try wines from the islands.

Best sales angle

Sell it on its origin: a white from southern Tenerife, from high-altitude vineyards on volcanic soils. Offering it by the glass usually makes the first taste easier.
