Condado de Huelva

Designation of origin in the east of the province of Huelva, Andalusia, known for young Zalema whites and for fortified wines with both biological and oxidative ageing.

Condado de Huelva is an Andalusian designation of origin in the east of the province of Huelva, between the city of Huelva and the province of Seville, next to the Doñana area. The climate is warm, with mild winters and an Atlantic influence that tempers temperatures, and the vineyards lie on flat or gently rolling land. Its signature variety is Zalema, a native white grape, alongside Palomino Fino, Listán de Huelva, Garrido Fino, Moscatel de Alejandría and Pedro Ximénez. The area makes light, young whites and keeps up a tradition of fortified wines, aged both under a veil of flor and oxidatively.

What it signals on a wine list

Wine-list perception

On the wine list, Condado de Huelva brings light, fresh whites from a rarely seen grape and fortified wines in a style close to Sherry. It is worth stating the style of each wine, because young whites, dry fortified wines and old or sweet wines all share the same name.

When to highlight it

It works especially well in seafood restaurants and on Andalusian wine lists that want to move beyond the usual names. The young whites suit by-the-glass service in warm weather, and the fortified wines suit aperitifs and tapas.

Guest profile

Guests looking for a light, easy-drinking white, or fans of Andalusian fortified wines who are curious about lesser-known areas.

Best sales angle

Present the whites as 'light Zalema white from Andalusia's Atlantic coast' and Condado Pálido as a local alternative to fino for the aperitif.
