Monterrei

Also known as: D.O. Monterrei

Galician designation of origin in the Támega valley, in Ourense next to the Portuguese border, known for its Godello whites and its Mencía reds.

Monterrei is a designation of origin in the south-east of the province of Ourense, in the valley of the river Támega, around Verín and next to the border with Portugal. Its climate is a transition between Atlantic and continental, drier and warmer in summer than in the Galician areas near the coast, which favours good ripening. Its main grapes are Godello, Treixadura and Doña Blanca for whites and Mencía for reds. It mainly produces whites with body and freshness and fruity Mencía reds.

What it signals on a wine list

Wine-list perception

On the wine list, Monterrei signals a knowledge of Galician wine that goes beyond the best-known areas. It is worth placing it next to Valdeorras and Ribeiro and stating the grape, because Godello is the name guests usually recognise.

When to highlight it

It works well when the sommelier wants to surprise with a Galician white other than Albariño. It is also a value option for guests looking for Godello or Mencía, often at a moderate price.

Guest profile

Informed, curious diners who enjoy Galician wines and appreciate discovering lesser-known areas.

Best sales angle

Through recommendation: present it as a Godello or a Mencía from a lesser-known part of Galicia. Offering a taste by the glass is usually the most effective argument.

Common mistakes

Leaving it off the wine list because the area is unfamiliar
Describing its whites as if they had the light, Atlantic profile of whites from the Galician coast
Serving the fuller-bodied whites too cold, which hides their texture

Suggested pairings

Shellfish
Galician-style fish
Goat's cheeses
White meats and poultry
Lacón (cured pork shoulder) and inland Galician cooking
