Yecla

Designation of origin on the high plateau of the northern Region of Murcia, centred on Monastrell, with good-value Mediterranean reds and some rosés.

Yecla is a designation of origin on the high plateau of the northern Region of Murcia, bordering the provinces of Albacete and Alicante, and its production area coincides with the municipality of Yecla. The climate is continental with Mediterranean influence, dry and with sharp temperature contrasts, and the soils are mainly calcareous and stony. Monastrell is the leading grape, joined by Garnacha Tintorera and other red varieties such as Tempranillo, Syrah and Cabernet Sauvignon. It mainly produces young and oak-aged reds, as well as rosés.

Worth highlighting when guests want a full-bodied red with good value, by the bottle or by the glass. It is especially well suited to grilled meat and inland cooking.

Common mistakes

Confusing it with Jumilla or presenting them as if they were the same appellation
Serving the reds too warm, which emphasises the alcohol of a grape that ripens easily
Offering only oak-aged reds and forgetting the young reds and rosés, which are more versatile by the glass

Suggested pairings

Grilled meat
Roast lamb and kid
Rice with rabbit
Cured meats and aged cheeses
Game stews
