Savoie

Also known as: Vin de Savoie, Savoy

Savoie is a wine region in the French Alps, known for its fresh, light whites made from Jacquère and for its spicy reds made from Mondeuse.

Savoie is a mountain wine region in the French Alps, with vineyards scattered across slopes near lakes and rivers, mainly in the Savoie and Haute-Savoie departments. Its main appellation, Vin de Savoie, allows the name of a cru to be added, such as Apremont, Abymes, Chignin or Arbin. Jacquère is the main white grape and gives light, fresh wines of moderate alcohol, while Altesse, Roussanne (known here as Bergeron) and Chasselas bring other profiles. Among the reds, Mondeuse stands out, spicy and with lively acidity, alongside Gamay and Pinot Noir.

What it signals on a wine list

Wine-list perception

Savoie signals mountain wines: light, fresh whites, and reds from rarely seen local grapes. On a wine list it brings a sense of discovery and a clear link with Alpine cooking, especially melted-cheese dishes.

When to highlight it

It is worth featuring in winter or in restaurants serving melted-cheese dishes such as fondue or raclette, where a fresh white balances the richness. It also works by the glass as a light, different white for aperitifs or fish.

Guest profile

It is recognised by sommeliers, lovers of French wine and guests who know the Alps or have skied in the area. For most it is a discovery and needs a brief explanation of the grape and the style.

Best sales angle

It sells better by telling the story of its Alpine origin and local grape (“a mountain white from Jacquère”, “Mondeuse, the red of Savoie”) than on the appellation name. Linking it to fondue or raclette gives the floor team an instant selling point.

Serving Jacquère whites with dishes that are too powerful and mask their light profile
Not distinguishing between Vin de Savoie, Roussette de Savoie and Crémant de Savoie, which are separate appellations

Suggested pairings
