Szekszárd

Also known as: Szekszard, Szekszárdi borvidék

A wine region in southern Hungary, by the Danube, known for reds grown on loess soils: Kadarka, Kékfrankos and Szekszárdi Bikavér.

Szekszárd is a wine region in southern Hungary, on the right bank of the Danube, with loess hills and a warmer climate than the regions in the north of the country. Its identity is red: it works with Kékfrankos (Blaufränkisch), with Kadarka, a grape with a long history here, and with Bordeaux varieties such as Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. Together with Eger, it is one of the two Hungarian regions allowed to make Bikavér, a traditional red blend. Its reds usually combine ripe fruit, spice and gentle tannins.

What it signals on a wine list

Wine-list perception

On a wine list, Szekszárd shows the red side of Hungary beyond Tokaj and signals curiosity about Central European grapes. A Kadarka or a Szekszárdi Bikavér suggests a considered selection, not an exotic gesture.

When to highlight it

Feature it when you want a medium-bodied red for stews, paprika dishes or small game, or to broaden a Central European section. Kadarka works well by the glass as an alternative to better-known light reds.

Guest profile

It is recognised by sommeliers, travellers who have been to Hungary and wine lovers who already know Tokaj or Villány. It also appeals to curious guests looking for light, spicy reds or less common grapes.

Best sales angle

It sells better by grape and by story than by region, because the name is little known and hard to pronounce. Kadarka as a historic grape and Bikavér as a traditional blend give a short story that is easy to tell at the table.

Common mistakes

Confusing Szekszárdi Bikavér with Egri Bikavér: they share a name but come from different regions and follow their own rules.
Reducing Hungary to the sweet wines of Tokaj and leaving out its reds.
Serving Kadarka too warm: it is a light-bodied grape that benefits from a slight chill.
