Liguria

Liguria is the narrow coastal strip of north-west Italy, with terraced vineyards above the sea, Vermentino and Pigato whites and light reds such as Rossese.

Liguria traces a narrow arc between the mountains and the Ligurian Sea, from the French border to Tuscany. Its vineyards, often terraced on very steep slopes, are split into small plots close to the coast. Whites from Vermentino and Pigato lead the way, alongside light reds such as Rossese di Dolceacqua. Cinque Terre also makes Sciacchetrà, a sweet wine from dried grapes.

What it signals on a wine list

Wine-list perception

On a wine list, Liguria speaks of the coast, terraced landscapes and Mediterranean cooking. It works as a discovery white for guests who already know Vermentino from elsewhere, and as a natural partner for dishes with pesto, fish or vegetables.

When to highlight it

It suits Italian, seafood or Mediterranean-inspired restaurants, especially in the warmer months. It is also a good by-the-glass option for starters with herbs, olive oil or pesto.

Guest profile

It is mostly recognised by guests who have travelled to Cinque Terre or the Riviera and by fans of regional Italian cooking. Sommeliers and curious wine lovers are drawn to rarely seen grapes such as Pigato or Rossese.

Best sales angle

It usually sells best through storytelling and grape: terraced vineyards above the sea and the names Vermentino or Pigato open the conversation. The region's name carries less weight than places like Cinque Terre or Portofino, which many guests know as destinations.

Common mistakes

Presenting every Ligurian white as a generic Vermentino, without distinguishing Pigato or the area of origin
Placing Rossese di Dolceacqua next to heavily structured reds, when its appeal lies in lightness and fragrance
Offering Sciacchetrà without explaining that it is a sweet wine from dried grapes, or without suggesting it with dessert

Suggested pairings

Trofie with pesto
Fried fish
Fresh anchovies
Ligurian-style rabbit
Focaccia and farinata
