Pantelleria

Also known as: Passito di Pantelleria, Moscato di Pantelleria

Pantelleria is a volcanic island between Sicily and Tunisia whose DOC is known for Passito di Pantelleria, a sweet wine made from Zibibbo grapes dried in the sun.

Pantelleria is a volcanic, very windy island in the Strait of Sicily, closer to the Tunisian coast than to Sicily. Its main grape is Zibibbo, the local name for Muscat of Alexandria, grown as low bush vines set in hollows dug into the ground to shelter them from the wind; this practice is on UNESCO's list of intangible cultural heritage. The island's best-known wine is Passito di Pantelleria, a sweet wine made from sun-dried grapes. Sweet Moscato and dry, aromatic Zibibbo whites are also made there.

Winerim view

What it signals on a wine list

Wine-list perception

Pantelleria brings a wine with history and landscape to the dessert section: a volcanic, windswept island between Sicily and Africa. It speaks of Mediterranean tradition and offers an alternative to the botrytised sweet wines more often found on lists.

When to highlight it

It works at dessert and after the meal, served by the glass so guests can try it without ordering a bottle. It also fits as the close of a tasting menu, with almond pastries or with cheese.

Guest profile

It is recognised by sweet-wine lovers and by guests who know Sicily or its cooking. For everyone else it is usually a discovery, best presented by telling its origin.

Best sales angle

It sells best through storytelling: the volcanic island, the wind and the sun-dried grapes explain the style in a single sentence. Mentioning that Zibibbo is a Muscat helps guests imagine its aromas.

Common mistakes

Not stating on the list whether it is a sweet passito or a dry Zibibbo white, two very different wines from the same island
Limiting the dessert section to botrytised wines and leaving out sweet wines from dried grapes such as Pantelleria's
Serving large pours: as a sweet wine it usually works best in a small glass and a short measure

Suggested pairings

Sicilian cannoli
Almond pastries
Blue cheeses
Apricot tart
Foie gras
