Primitivo di Manduria

Also known as: Primitivo di Manduria DOC

A southern Puglia DOC centred on the town of Manduria, making warm, generous Primitivo reds with ripe dark fruit, spicy notes and soft tannins.

Primitivo di Manduria is a DOC in southern Puglia surrounding the town of Manduria, in the province of Taranto, close to the Ionian Sea. Its grape, Primitivo, takes its name from its early ripening and is genetically the same variety as California's Zinfandel. The warm climate and the tradition of bush-trained vines (alberello) produce reds with generous alcohol, ripe dark fruit, spicy notes and soft tannins. The area's sweet red, made from overripe grapes, has its own separate DOCG: Primitivo di Manduria Dolce Naturale.

What it signals on a wine list

Wine-list perception

On a wine list, Primitivo di Manduria signals a generous, ripe Italian red that is easy to understand. Many guests recognise it by the grape, and it usually works in the mid-price range of the Italian section.

When to highlight it

Feature it when a guest asks for a full-bodied, fruity red without hard edges, or alongside bold Italian cooking, stews and grilled meats. In autumn and winter it works well as a by-the-glass recommendation.

Guest profile

It is recognised by lovers of Italian food and by guests who enjoy ripe, rich reds. It also appeals to those who know Zinfandel and want to try its Italian counterpart.

Best sales angle

It sells mainly on grape and style: “Primitivo” is a familiar name that suggests ripe fruit and softness. The Zinfandel connection gives floor staff a simple story they can tell in one sentence.
