Ahr
Also known as: Ahr region
A small German region, one of the country's most northerly, known above all for its Spätburgunder (Pinot Noir) reds. It also makes dry rosé and light reds.
Ahr is a small region in western Germany, in the valley of the river Ahr, south of Bonn. Despite its latitude, its steep, sheltered slopes allow Spätburgunder, the grape that defines the region, to ripen. With a cool, temperate continental climate, it produces fine, fresh reds, from light versions to drink young to more serious ones, as well as dry rosé. It is a clearly specialised region: Spätburgunder above all.
