Alicante

Designation of origin in the province of Alicante, known for its Monastrell reds, its La Marina Moscatels and Fondillón, a traditional wine with long ageing.

DO Alicante covers the province of the same name in the Valencian Community and is split into two areas: Vinalopó, inland, and La Marina, along the coast. Inland, with a dry Mediterranean climate and mostly limestone soils, Monastrell dominates, alongside Garnacha Tintorera and Tempranillo. In La Marina, Moscatel de Alejandría stands out as the basis for aromatic whites and sweet wines. Its most distinctive wine is Fondillón, made from overripe Monastrell and aged for many years in barrel.

What it signals on a wine list

Wine-list perception

On the wine list it helps to show the grape next to the name, as Monastrell and Moscatel guide guests more than the DO itself. Fondillón deserves its own line in the sweet or fortified section, with a short explanation.

When to highlight it

Monastrell reds fit when the table wants a ripe Mediterranean red for meat and rice dishes. The Moscatels and Fondillón are a good suggestion for the end of the meal.

Guest profile

Curious guests who already know Monastrell from Jumilla or Yecla and want to compare, and visitors looking for local wines in restaurants on the eastern Spanish coast.

Best sales angle

Through Mediterranean Monastrell for the reds and the uniqueness of Fondillón after the meal.
