Bierzo

Spain's breakout appellation. Bierzo and its Mencía produce Atlantic reds with an elegance and freshness reminiscent of the finest Pinot Noir.

Bierzo is the Spanish appellation that has gained the most prestige over the last 15 years. Mencía, an Atlantic red variety, produces wines here of a finesse and complexity that have surprised the world. Álvaro Palacios and Ricardo Pérez (Descendientes de J. Palacios) pioneered the case for old-vine plots on slate slopes. Today Bierzo has its own vineyard classification system (Vino de Villa, Vino de Paraje), a clear sign of its ambition.

What it signals on a wine list

Wine-list perception

Bierzo signals judgement, relevance and wine knowledge. It is the appellation found on wine lists that want to go beyond Rioja and Ribera. A sommelier who recommends Mencía shows they are up to date.

When to highlight it

On ambitious wine lists with a point of view. Ideal as an elegant, fresh alternative to heavier Castilian reds. Also as a red 'for white wine drinkers': light, fresh and versatile.

Guest profile

Wine enthusiasts, curious guests, food critics. Growing recognition, but it still needs active recommendation.

Best sales angle

It sells better through recommendation and food pairing than on the appellation name. The word 'Mencía' is earning recognition in its own right. Single-plot wines sell on the producer.

Leaving out Bierzo Godello, an interesting alternative to Valdeorras
Misreading the style: Mencía is not a light Tempranillo, it has its own Atlantic personality
