Ribeira Sacra

Also known as: D.O. Ribeira Sacra

Ribeira Sacra is a Galician designation of origin with terraced vineyards above the canyons of the Miño and Sil rivers, known for its fresh Mencía reds.

Ribeira Sacra lies in inland Galicia, between the provinces of Lugo and Ourense, along the canyons of the Miño and Sil rivers. Its vineyards are planted on terraces cut into very steep slopes, with slate and granite soils, so much of the vineyard work has to be done by hand. The climate combines Atlantic and continental influences, and many slopes receive plenty of sun. Mencía is the leading grape, giving fresh, aromatic reds, alongside Garnacha Tintorera and Godello whites.

Winerim view

What it signals on a wine list

Wine-list perception

Ribeira Sacra signals a sense of place: terraced vineyards above river canyons and a monastic tradition tied to the landscape. On a wine list it usually reads as a fresh, mineral Atlantic Mencía.

When to highlight it

It is worth highlighting in restaurants with gastronomic ambition and on lists looking for fresh reds as an alternative to more structured ones. It also works by the glass to introduce Galician Mencía.

Knowledgeable guests or enthusiasts who value landscape and mountain viticulture, and who tend to prefer fresh, elegant reds.
