Terra Alta
Designation of origin in inland Tarragona, in southern Catalonia, known for its whites from Garnacha Blanca and its reds from Garnacha and Cariñena.
Terra Alta is a designation of origin in south-western Catalonia, in the interior of the province of Tarragona, near the river Ebro and the border with Aragon. Its climate is Mediterranean with a continental influence, dry and sunny, and the vineyards are spread across plateaus and slopes with calcareous soils. It stands out for Garnacha Blanca, which gives full-bodied whites, alongside Macabeo, and for reds from Garnacha and Cariñena. It mainly produces dry whites, with or without oak, and reds with ripe fruit and good structure.

What it signals on a wine list
Wine-list perception
On the wine list, Terra Alta signals Mediterranean Garnacha with its own identity, in both white and red. It is worth highlighting Garnacha Blanca, its hallmark and what best sets it apart from its neighbours Priorat and Montsant.
When to highlight it
To offer a full-bodied Mediterranean white that can stand up to hearty dishes. For reds, it is an alternative to Priorat and Montsant that is often more moderately priced.
Guest profile
Guests with a medium-to-high level of wine knowledge, interested in Garnacha and in lesser-known Catalan areas.
Best sales angle
By grape: Garnacha Blanca for whites and Garnacha and Cariñena for reds. A comparison with Priorat helps place it, without presenting it as a lesser version.
