Garnacha Blanca

Also known as: Grenache Blanc, Garnatxa Blanca

The white mutation of Garnacha (Grenache), backbone of Terra Alta whites and a key component of southern Rhône whites: broad, rich, Mediterranean wines.

Garnacha Blanca is the pale-skinned version of Garnacha (Grenache), a colour mutation of the same variety. It is deeply rooted in north-eastern Spain, above all in Terra Alta, where it is the benchmark white grape, and in southern France, where it goes into white wines from the Rhône and Roussillon. It makes full-bodied whites with a rich texture and moderate acidity that gain complexity with lees ageing or oak. In Roussillon it also features in vins doux naturels.

Winerim view

How it is perceived on the list

Wine-list perception

Guests recognise the Garnacha (Grenache) name, but many do not know there is a white version. That surprise works in its favour: it sounds familiar and different at the same time.

When it helps sell

When the list needs a full-bodied white that is not Chardonnay and speaks of the Mediterranean. It works very well with rice dishes, oven-baked fish and seasonal produce.

Guest profile

Guests who order whites with volume and little sharp acidity, or who are looking for alternatives to classic oaked whites. Also the curious diner who knows red Garnacha and wants to try its white version.

Best sales angle

Sell it on texture and origin: 'Garnacha in white, broad and Mediterranean, from Terra Alta'. Offering it by the glass with rice dishes and baked fish is an easy way to introduce it.

When to highlight the grape

On Mediterranean or Catalan restaurant wine lists and wherever there is a section of age-worthy whites, where lees-aged versions add depth.

How to use Garnacha Blanca on a real wine list

A quick operating read to turn Garnacha Blanca into buying, recommendation and library navigation.

Guest reading

Garnacha Blanca should read as a familiar variety, a discovery or an origin argument. That role decides its visual weight.

Floor cue

Summarize Garnacha Blanca through texture, acidity, origin or dish. If the explanation takes longer than the decision, the sale weakens.

List role

Connect Garnacha Blanca with regions, styles and pairings so it does not become an isolated entry.

Compare it with one safe alternative and one differentiating option before listing it by the glass or bottle.

Common mistakes

Serving it too cold: at low temperatures it loses the texture and fruit that define it.
Presenting it as a light, crisp white: it is a full-bodied wine and guests should know that.
Not stating whether it has been aged: a young version and one aged in oak or on lees are very different wines.
