Bourgueil

Bourgueil is an appellation on the north bank of the Loire, in Touraine, devoted mainly to fresh Cabernet Franc reds with red fruit and herbal notes.

Bourgueil lies on the north bank of the Loire in Touraine, west of Tours and not far from Chinon. It makes almost exclusively red wine, plus a little rosé, from Cabernet Franc, also known here as Breton, with a small permitted share of Cabernet Sauvignon. The gravel and sand terraces near the river tend to give lighter, fruitier wines, while the slopes, over the soft local limestone known as tuffeau, produce firmer reds that can age. The result is a fresh red with red fruit and a herbal touch that is very versatile at the table.

What it signals on a wine list

Wine-list perception

Bourgueil signals Loire Cabernet Franc: a fresh, food-friendly red of moderate alcohol. On a wine list it offers an alternative to powerful reds and usually gives good value compared with better-known French reds.

When to highlight it

It shines when a guest asks for a light or fresh red, or when the menu features charcuterie, poultry or pork. It also works by the glass, served slightly cool (14-16 °C), in the warmer months.

Guest profile

It is recognised by Loire wine lovers and by sommeliers looking for fresh Cabernet Franc reds. The general guest usually knows Chinon better, so it helps to present Bourgueil as its neighbour on the other bank of the Loire.

Best sales angle

It sells better on grape and style (“fresh Loire Cabernet Franc”) than on the name, which many guests don't know or mix up. The comparison with Chinon and the difference between gravel and slope wines give the floor team a simple story to tell.

Common mistakes

Confusing Bourgueil with Burgundy (Bourgogne) because the names look alike
Serving it too warm: it loses freshness and vibrancy of fruit
Treating the light gravel-terrace reds the same as the slope wines, which are more tannic and benefit from time or decanting

Suggested pairings

Charcuterie and rillettes
Roast poultry
Roast pork
Sautéed mushrooms
Grilled vegetables (rosé)
