Picpoul de Pinet

Also known as: AOP Picpoul de Pinet

A Languedoc AOP beside the Thau lagoon that covers only white wine from Picpoul, usually dry, light, citrusy and crisp: a classic partner for oysters and shellfish.

Picpoul de Pinet is an AOP in the Languedoc, in the Hérault département, whose vineyards lie beside the Thau lagoon near Sète, an area known for oyster and mussel farming. It covers white wine only, made exclusively from Picpoul Blanc (also spelt Piquepoul), a local variety with marked acidity. It used to be a complementary designation within the former Coteaux du Languedoc AOC; today it is an AOP in its own right. The wines are usually dry, light and fresh, with citrus notes and a saline finish, and are meant to be drunk young.

What it signals on a wine list

Wine-list perception

On a wine list, Picpoul de Pinet signals a fresh, coastal French white, usually at a modest price, closely linked to seafood. It is a simple way to offer a French alternative to the more familiar Atlantic whites.

When to highlight it

Feature it alongside oysters, raw or steamed shellfish and simple fish dishes, and as an aperitif white by the glass. It is especially well suited to terraces and hot weather.

Guest profile

It is mainly recognised by sommeliers and by guests who know the south of France or have drunk it with seafood on the coast. For many it will be a discovery, so it is worth introducing it with a sentence about its style.

Best sales angle

It sells better on food pairing and style than on the grape: “the white for the oysters of the Thau lagoon” is understood instantly. The name of the appellation also includes the grape, which makes it easier to remember.

Serving it too cold: between 8 and 10 °C it keeps its freshness without muting the aromas
Describing it only as a “Languedoc white” without mentioning its grape or its link with seafood
