Dão
Also known as: Região de Dão
Portugal's region of elegant reds, where altitude and granite produce aromatic, structured wines built to age. Dão is the discovery for anyone looking for a more sophisticated Portugal.
Dão is one of the most elegant regions of mainland Portugal. Set on a plateau in the centre of the country ringed by mountain ranges, its granite soils and cooler climate yield reds with exceptional aromatics and a structure that calls for 5 or more years of ageing. Dão Touriga Nacional differs from Douro's: more perfumed, less powerful, more elegant. Encruzado whites are surprisingly complex.

What it signals on a wine list
Wine-list perception
Dão signals sophistication and knowledge. It is the choice of someone who understands wine but wants to steer clear of the obvious. It works well on wine lists that want “premium Portugal, but not Douro”.
When to highlight it
On specialist or wine-bar lists, as a more elegant alternative to Alentejo, in pairings with red meat, and as a suggestion for adventurous guests.
Guest profile
Sommeliers and enthusiasts looking for depth. Less known to the general guest, it needs some “education” at the point of sale but meets high expectations.
Best sales angle
Sells on grape variety (Touriga Nacional), on the mountain-wine concept and on bottle age. Needs a sommelier's recommendation.
