Empordà

Designation of origin in north-eastern Catalonia, in the province of Girona, between the Pyrenees and the Costa Brava, with Mediterranean-style Garnacha and Cariñena reds.

Empordà lies in the far north-east of Catalonia, in the province of Girona, between the foothills of the Pyrenees and the Costa Brava, next to the French border. Its Mediterranean climate is shaped by the tramontana, a dry north wind that helps keep the vines healthy. Decomposed granite and slate soils are common, planted mainly with Garnacha, Cariñena and Macabeo. It makes Mediterranean-style reds, rosés and whites, as well as Garnatxa de l'Empordà, a traditional sweet wine.

What it signals on a wine list

Wine-list perception

On the wine list it often helps to pair the name Empordà with a reference to the Costa Brava, as many guests place the landscape more easily than the appellation. Showing the grape, especially Garnacha or Cariñena, helps set expectations about the style.

When to highlight it

It suits Mediterranean and seafood-focused restaurants, and wine lists looking for a Catalan alternative to Penedès or Montsant. The rosés and whites work especially well in summer.

Guest profile

Guests who know the Costa Brava or have holidayed there, and enthusiasts looking for fresh Mediterranean reds.

Best sales angle

Through the Costa Brava landscape and the tramontana, and through Garnacha and Cariñena as Mediterranean grapes.
